BayING Structured Doctoral Programmes

The Bayreuth Center for Engineering Sciences (BayING) currently offers two structured doctoral programmes:

  • BattTech (Battery Technology)
In cooperation with the Bavarian Center for Battery Technology (BayBatt), BattTech provides an interdisciplinary doctoral programme focused on battery research. Various engineering and scientific disciplines collaborate closely to develop innovative solutions for future energy storage systems.
  • PESBA (Engineering Science Bayreuth–Australia)
PESBA is a binational doctoral programme in collaboration with partner universities in Australia. Doctoral candidates spend at least twelve months at each participating institution and receive a joint degree from both universities. The programme fosters international research experience and intercultural competencies.

In both programmes, doctoral candidates earn at least 30 credit points through a diverse range of scientific and interdisciplinary activities. These include active participation in research seminars, presentations, and poster sessions at scientific conferences; publications; attendance at summer and winter schools; teaching activities; and professional development opportunities offered by the University of Bayreuth Graduate School (UBTGS).

A central component of the programmes is extended mentorship: In addition to their primary supervisor, each doctoral candidate is supported by at least two additional researchers who contribute to their professional and personal development throughout the doctoral process.

Perspectives and Added Value for Doctoral Candidates

Engineering sciences are increasingly interdisciplinary and international. BayING’s doctoral programmes specifically prepare candidates for these evolving demands. Through close collaboration across disciplines, candidates develop comprehensive scientific skills and learn to address complex challenges from multiple perspectives.

International programmes such as PESBA provide valuable experience abroad and help build global research networks. Furthermore, continuing education courses strengthen key competencies such as academic writing, presentation techniques, research ethics, and career planning.

Regular exchange with fellow doctoral candidates, as well as interactions with partners from academia and industry, broaden professional networks and open up diverse career opportunities.

BayING graduates therefore not only possess excellent technical and scientific qualifications, but also the interdisciplinary and international competences required for responsible roles in research, industry, and academia.
